bar miyako and casino royale cocktails

While the new James Bond film has unfortunately been delayed for a while, why not use the time to go over (and of course drink) 007’s favorite cocktails? This week, I’ve focused on the cocktails of Casino Royale (the first Bond novel published by Ian Fleming in 1953 and the first Bond film to feature Daniel Craig in 2006).

Most famous, of course, is the Vesper martini (Bond’s very own creation), named after the love of his life and made with “three measures of Gordon’s; one of vodka; half a measure of Kina Lillet,” shaken over ice and served with a think slice of lemon peel. A heavenly creation for those who like their martinis shaken, not stirred.

But Bond actually drinks some other cocktails while saving the world and seducing beautiful women. His first drink in the novel is an Americano – a Campari-based cocktail said to have originated in Italy as the favorite drink of American ex-pats during Prohibition, hence the name. In the film, the first drink Bond orders is “a large Mount Gay with soda.” Mount Gay, one of Fleming’s favorite rums, is made in Barbados from pure water filtered from coral limestone, of which the island is made.

Whether you’re the martini-type, or someone who prefers your drinks a bit lighter and fizzier, I can find you the perfect Bond cocktail, so please stop by if your interest is piqued! This week, #barmiyako is open as usual from 7pm to 1am on weekdays and from 7pm to 12am on Saturday.
