bar miyako and jane walkers

ジョニーウォーカーをこよなく愛する bar miyako ですが、お店にはジョニーならぬジェーンウォーカーも存在することはご存じですか。

ジョニーのシンボルと言えばシルクハットを被って歩く紳士の「ストライディングマン」ですが、そのロゴの女性版である「ストライディングウーマン」をあしらったボトルが実は2本ございます。

2018年3月8日の「国際女性デー」に合わせてアメリカ限定でリリースされた「ジェーン・ウォーカー 12年」に加え、その後パッケージ等を変更して2020年にリリースされた「ジェーン・ウォーカー 10年」も今回新たに入手しました。

ご興味のある方はぜひ遊びにいらしてください！ボトルや中身の詳細、2018年発売当初の米国でのやや予想外の反応についてなどはぜひお店で。

Many of you know that bar miyako is madly in love with Johnnie Walker, but how many of you know that we also have some bottles of Johnnie’s female counterpart, Jane?

For the Jane Walker editions, Johnnie’s world renowned iconic Striding Man logo has been transformed into a Striding Woman, complete with top hat, tails and cane. The first 12-year edition was released in the US in 2018 to coincide with International Women’s Day on March 8, and 2 years later, the 10-year Jane Walker was born.

We’ve gotten our hands on both bottles, so please stop by if you’d like a taste or even just an up-close view of the bottles.  (Interestingly, it seems like Jane’s initial reception in the US in 2018 was not quite what the makers expected, but more on this at the bar…)

This week, bar miyako is open as usual from 7pm to 1am on Monday to Friday. Hope to see you all back at the bar soon!

bar miyako and timorous beastie

2020年は子年とうことで、今週はボトルにかわいい二十日鼠が描かれたダグラスレイン社のブレンデッドモルト「ティモラス　ビースティ(臆病な小動物）」のご紹介です！

ダグラスラインといえば、ごっついおじさまがボトルに踊るアイラブレンド「ビッグピート」でおなじみですが、「ティモラス…」はハニーバタートーストのような甘くてフローラルなハイランドブレンドです。

そして名前の由来はスコットランドの国民的詩人、ロバートバーンズの詩「二十日鼠へ」に登場する、突如人間のクワによって一所懸命作った巣を壊され、逃げ惑う臆病(ティモラス)で気の毒な小動物のネズミ（ビースティー)です。一寸先は闇！の「不確実な未来」に思いを馳せながら一杯いかがですか（笑)

余談ですが、1月25日はスコットランドでバーンズファンが彼を讃えるために行う「バーンズナイト」だそうです！ファンの方もぜひ、一緒に一杯傾けましょう。

To commemorate 2020 being the Year of the Mouse in Japan, this week’s spotlight is on a scotch named after a mouse – Douglas Laing’s Highland malt blend, “Timorous Beastie.”

Many of you may know Douglas Laing for its peaty and punchy Islay malt blend “Big Peat,” but Timorous is a sweet, rich, floral blend reminiscent of honey toast.

The name is taken from the poor timorous beastie which has its nest destroyed and life upended by a plough in “To a Mouse,” written by Scottish poet Robert Burns. Why not ponder the fickle fate of mice and men over a glass of Timorous?

It was also pointed out to me that January 25 is Burns’ Night in Scotland, where the poet is commemorated by his fans. Another perfect reason to try some Beastie!

bar miyako is open as usual this week from 7pm to 1am on weekdays and from 7pm to 12 midnight on Saturday. I hope to see you all back at the bar!
