bar miyako and women in distilling 3 – bombay sapphire / dr. anne brock

3月は「女性史月刊」ということで女性が携わるお酒に注目してきましたが、今週は誰もが愛するジン、ボンベイサファイアのマスターディスティラー、アン ブロック博士についてご紹介したいと思います。

During “Women’s History Month” in March, we’ve been highlighting spirits with women at the helm. This week, we’d like to introduce Dr. Anne Brock, the Master Distiller at Bombay Sapphire, a gin we all know and love.

Dr. Brock is tasked with maintaining the quality and consistency of Bombay Sapphire gin, overseeing a team of 14 distillers responsible for daily production. However, her career path is somewhat unusual.

According to an interview with Gin Magazine, Dr. Brock initially pursued a medical degree with the goal of becoming a doctor, but after a year, she found it wasn’t for her and went into bartending! She then earned a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Oxford University, which provided her with the scientific background for her current profession, distilling.

“I finished my PhD and wanted a job, and there’s this idea that the organic chemist and the bartender could come together in one person – and that’s a gin distiller,” according to Dr. Brock.

Perhaps it’s due to this bold career shift that we continue to enjoy the delightful taste of Bombay today! Here’s to Dr. Anne Brock and her remarkable journey!

This week, we will be closed on Wednesday, March 20 for a national holiday, but open all other weekdays from 7pm to 1am, so hope to see you all back at the bar!

bar miyako and women and distilling 2 – maker’s mark / margie samuels

In celebration of Women’s History Month this March, we’re shining a spotlight on women in distilling. This week, we’re featuring Maker’s Mark and honoring Margie Samuels, a driving force behind the iconic bourbon brand.

Many bourbon enthusiasts recognize Maker’s Mark by its distinctive red wax bottle top. But did you know that Margie Samuels, the wife of sixth-generation distiller Bill Samuels, played a pivotal role in shaping the brand’s identity? Margie not only conceptualized the red wax bottle topper, but also influenced the bottle’s design, the label’s aesthetic, and even came up with the whisky’s name itself.

According to details from the distillery’s website, Margie was inspired by Maker’s Mark’s exceptional flavor and sought to ensure its presence stood out on store shelves. “It is said that Margie is the reason most folks buy their first bottle of Maker’s Mark and Bill, Sr. is the reason they buy their second bottle.”

In essence, Margie’s innovative vision has left an indelible mark on the whiskey industry. Here’s to celebrating her invaluable contributions! Cheers to Margie Samuels!

This week, operations will be slightly irregular as Miyako will not be at the bar on Tuesday and Wednesday, during which Yuki Nozawa, who runs our sister bar, bar miyako living, will be in charge of the main bar (bar miyako living will be closed for those two days.)

On Monday, Miyako will be at the bar but we will close one hour early at 12 am. We apologize deeply for any inconvenience and thank you so much for your understanding.
