3月は「女性史月刊」ということで女性が携わるお酒に注目してきましたが、今週は誰もが愛するジン、ボンベイサファイアのマスターディスティラー、アン ブロック博士についてご紹介したいと思います。
彼女はボンベイサファイアの蒸留責任者として14人の蒸溜技師チームを率いて日々ボンベイの製造や品質管理に携わっていますが、実は少し異色の経歴の持ち主でもあります。
イギリスのジンマガジンによりますと、元々医者を目指して医大に進んだものの、1年で自分に向いてないと判断、バーテンダーに転身！その後オックスフォード大学で有機化学の博士号を取得、その知識を活かしジンの蒸留の世界に飛び込んだそうです。
すなわち私たちが本日も美味しいボンベイが飲めるのは、彼女のその思い切った人生の選択のおかげなのかもしれませんね！アンブロック博士に乾杯！

During “Women’s History Month” in March, we’ve been highlighting spirits with women at the helm. This week, we’d like to introduce Dr. Anne Brock, the Master Distiller at Bombay Sapphire, a gin we all know and love.
Dr. Brock is tasked with maintaining the quality and consistency of Bombay Sapphire gin, overseeing a team of 14 distillers responsible for daily production. However, her career path is somewhat unusual.
According to an interview with Gin Magazine, Dr. Brock initially pursued a medical degree with the goal of becoming a doctor, but after a year, she found it wasn’t for her and went into bartending! She then earned a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Oxford University, which provided her with the scientific background for her current profession, distilling.
“I finished my PhD and wanted a job, and there’s this idea that the organic chemist and the bartender could come together in one person – and that’s a gin distiller,” according to Dr. Brock.
Perhaps it’s due to this bold career shift that we continue to enjoy the delightful taste of Bombay today! Here’s to Dr. Anne Brock and her remarkable journey!
